My apologies in advance. I am new here and ignorant in so many ways. I have attached a photo of some stamps that may be 10's or 11's. Can some please give me an opinion either way? How do you differentiate between the two? Am I even close with my first guess?

For the record, the OP was asked to post the question in the Classic US forum rather than the Modern US forum where it was originally posted. Is there a way for a user to move a thread rather than repost?

From the picture, I cannot tell if any of the stamps are the right color for a 10 or 10A. Hint, scan ebay or better yet a good auction site like Siegel Auctions PowerSearch and look for 10 or 10a versus 11 or 11a. After looking at a few dozen examples of each you may be able to see the difference. Or maybe not, since there are so many shades of this set of stamps, it can be hard to categorize which family of shades a particular stamp came from, especially from computer scans.

Good luck!

Hi mbaranovic --

The difference between a Scott #10/10A and #11/11A are based on two factors:

First -- the plate from which the stamp was printed. Scott #'s 10/10A come from plates 1E, 1i, 2E, 5E, and 0. Scott #'s 11/11A come from plates 1L, 2L, 3, 4, 5L, 6, 7, and 8.

Second -- the presence -- or absence of any recutting of the inner lines (or a portion of either inner line). More specifically, a stamp with no trace of recutting of either inner line is either a Scott #10 or a Scott #11 based upon the plate from which it was printed. Alternatively, a stamp with recutting of both inner lines, either inner line, or even a tiny portion of an inner line is either a Scott #10A or #11A -- again based on the plate from which the stamp was printed.

Bottom line -- in order to assist you with identification as to Scott # we will need higher resolution scans of your stamps to make a determination as to plate ID and inner line recutting .

Regards // ioagoa
