There has been much discussion at times about sending a cover in for certification whereby the stamp is required to be lifted for identification. What is the process the PF for example would use?
I don't know how the PF lifts stamps, but the normal procedure is to use a "sweat box" - basically like a tupperware container with a sponge soaked in water on the bottom and shelf to hold the cover over (but not in contact with) the sponge below. Put the cover in the sweat box for a several hours/overnight and gum will soften and allow the stamp to pop off without damaging the stamp or cover.
the sweat box doesn't wash-off the gum, so it can be reaffixed using the original gum; however, I think most people prefer to hinge the stamp back on the cover so that the watermark or paper type (whatever required the stamp to be lifted for identification) can be checked again in the future without having to lift the stamp again.
