I received a 2024 Far and wide coil definitive on a letter this week.
Comparing the coil definitive P stamp
with the booklet stamp I find that there are differences.
I scanned them together but hard to line up once you
close the lid as you can see.
The grey in CANADA is much lighter than the booklet version.
The Maple Leaf is more orange red compared to the red in the booklet.
The lake water is violet blue compared to the greenish blue in the booklet.

I realize there are many differences in shades and colours in the last few years of
the far and wide definitives and the small mammals before etc etc. but now I'm starting
to wonder how common are these counterfeits.

In the Corgi Times March - April 2024 article by M. Zatka he compares genuine with
counterfeit and they look very similar.
There is no way Mr/Mrs Public stamp user would know the difference.
Apparently same problem in the US where some of the counterfeits look
better/sharper than the genuine.

Your used coil example shows 'nibs' along the top and bottom die cutting. As such, it is not a counterfeit.

The counterfeit stamps do not have these nibs.

I would consider this a minor colour shade (i.e. a 'normal' printing variety).

Here is a counterfeit:

Thanks Robin for explaining how to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit
Canadian coil stamps.

IMO the counterfeits look like a genuine copy.

Sadly, counterfeit coils are easy to purchase via ebay (from China of course). They sell at less than 50% face value.

I tried reporting one seller to ebay and got an AI response saying nothing was wrong with the listing.

Canada Post news release August 2024

Quote:
In the first six months of 2024, the loss from operations was $490 million, compared to $371 million in the same period of 2023.

Canada Post is bleeding to death and counterfeit stamps contribute but are
not anywhere near the main reason.

Letter mail volumes down by 30 million pieces compared to 2023
Even parcel revenues are down due to commercial competition.
Only junk mail revenues and volumes are up.

How many under 25 have ever mailed a letter?
Like who needs stamps anymore?
