Hi, I do not (not yet?) collect precancels. What can be said about this one?
ChatGPT answers contradictorily. Thanks in advance.

To save us time ... *what* does ChatGPT say?

I would recommend the Precancel Stamp Society's "Classic Precancel Catalog, Part 1, Precancels With Town Names on U.S. Issues Before 1908" as the place to look. It is avaiable to purchase on Their website, although probably not economical for only one question. Be patient and someone will check their copy and post here.

These are listed for either 20 or 25 US$ in the PSS Classics I catalog. There are 2 similar varieties. They are rather common. They come from 4 different cities, Philadelphia the easy one.

As I said I do not collect precancels. When I asked ChatGPT about the precancels of the 1902 series the reply was a listing from 1c to 50c. No Dollar. When I asked again about the 1902 $1 precanceled the answer was that it is pretty scarce and sought after. That's why I asked the competent people here. Thank you everybody.

Ah, you bring forth my hidden shame. As a new Precancel collector, about 20 years ago, I was foolish enough to pay a decent amount of money for one of these (knowing the Scott value of the unprecancelled version). I keep it at the front of my PA collection to remind myself......

Although actually if it is listed at $20, maybe I should cut myself some slack ... I think I paid about $40, so I wasted a dollar a year. Probably worth it for the education the experience gave me.
