Given it's mint (no gum), is in very good shape, and has a lighter color than other 1852 25c stamps I've seen, I suspect this is an essay. Anyone want to take a stab at it?

It's an 1853 stamp - Empire, not Republic.

It could be the 1862 reprint. A trial color proof is possible though.
In the color trial proofs :the printing should be apparent from the back of the stamp.
Difficult to judge if the color I see on my screen is the same color of the stamp.

In terms of colour, there's a wide range of shades of this issue - Maury lists nine or ten.
