I recently spotted an R60a on ebay with an indistinct red canx. I didn't think it was any of the red canx I pay attention to, but decided to take a chance and just buy it anyway.

Having now received it, it is not even close to what I thought I was seeing.

Has anyone seen a canx like this before, or possibly have a scan showing more or all of it? My *guess* is "IMPO" is "IMPORT" or "IMPORTED".

Thanks in advance for any help the community is able to provide!

I have not seen this one before; It is clearly some kind of custom house marking. Possibly "liquidated", or "rated" at top. I think imported is certainly possible at bottom. San Francisco used some red markings.

Possibly "liquidated"

Agree it could be LIQUIDATED, which is a very Custom House marking (meaning all required actions and fees have been paid/completed).

That said, the handstamp would be have to be very large!

Thanks for post!

The lettering on the black liquidated handstamp is at least as large. Need at least a pair to see it complete.

Custom House canx "NY Type 1" for those who didn't know what RevCollector was referencing:

One of only three examples I have seen with a handstamp canx in addition to the LIQUIDATED (which is not actually a canx). The other one is an example with a Phelps Dodge CDS. (Corrected from "two examples" to "three examples")

I have seen at least a few singles with this cancel. I will check my examples later.

Scan of the Phelps Dodge example

Also found another copy of the Naylor & Co canx.

For those that care, these LIQUIDATED examples are known from approx 3 Dec 1862 to 9 Jan 1863
