FOSO
-6JAN37 9--AM
GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast stamp of 1928 depicts a view of Christiansborg Castle at Accra. The three-penny stamp (StampWorld.com #97) was affixed to the letter a year after the death of King George V.

Foso was the name of a town and post office in the Gold Coast. In modern Ghana it is known as Assin Fosu. The location is shown on the map.

ROSE-HILL
A
JA 7
87

Mauritius Government Railway operated train service across the then Crown Colony largely to service sugar cane production starting in 1860. Rose-Hill was a village with a post office on one of the rail lines and its station is mentioned in the address on this 1887 postal card. Today, Rose-Hill is a region within the third largest town in Mauritius, and it carries the name Bassin-Rose Hill.

@lithograving: It's great to be back doing this. Thank you.

CASABLANCA

JA 9

The stamp is a five-centimos Queen Victoria (StampWorld.com # 1 or #9), issued in 1899, used to uprate a matching five-centimos wrapper. Both the stamp and the wrapper were created using Gibraltar postal stocks. The currency was Spanish pesetas.

Morocco Agencies postage stamps were produced to be used in British post offices established inside Morocco to facilitate communication and business to standards the British believed they needed. Those agencies ended with Moroccan independence in 1957.
You may recall that Casablanca was a French-controlled town in 1941, based on the movie of the same name. So why was Spanish currency used in this posting? It appears the British went to great lengths to attract postal business and accommodate their cliental by selling their services in three different currencies. I am showing a map of the region to show the proximity of Gibraltar to the offices they administered in Morocco.

So, I picture a customer coming up to the French currency wicket at the British Post Office and purchasing two copies of what would become at StampWorld.com, number 13, a three half-penny British stamp overprinted for Morocco Agencies with the French currency of 15 centimes showing. Or would one wicket sell all three currencies and maintain all three sets of postage stamps? Image balancing the books at the end of the day!

BRITISH HONDURAS

The slug for AM is inverted showing WV

The name for the post office came from the booms that were used to store harvested mahogany logs before they were floated down the Belize River to Belize City. The use of a British half-penny Wilding QEII stamp probably came about because of the perceived threat in 1957; that an invasion from Guatemala could be imminent. Britain sent over 200 troops to protect the colony; The postmark may have landed on either an incoming letter or an outing piece of mail written by the soldiers. The community is now known as Burrell Boom and upon independence, British Honduras became known as Belize.

BRIEFVERSAND

The message in the slogan speaks of the convenience of traveller's checks. Briefversand in the postmark is letter collection and the location, time, and date within the postmark described when it happened. Helvetia is Latin for Switzerland and is an efficient means of putting the country name on a stamp where French, German and Italian are all official languages. It is also an historical version of the name of the country. The stamps are 10-centime and 20-centime values from a 1930's series showing local motifs.
