"GWL" appears to be perforated this stamp. What does this signify?

This is a perfin (perforated initial) from the Great Western Life Insurance Co in Canada. Perfins were used by companies to prevent theft of postage.

For more info on the different types of this perfin, see pages 5.G.4 to 5.G.6 of this handbook for different variations and you can actually identify which city/office they came from.

It is a perfin, probably used in an office and perforated to deter unauthorized use

If you're searching, search for Great-West Life Assurance Company (though anything close will probably show up). I don't know which of their offices this one comes from.

They appear to sometimes have one extra "hole" that is found in different locations on the perfins of various offices, perhaps as an I.d.? Winnipeg seems to not have such a "hole"? You can use that for whatever it's worth in your further searching.

Wow, it appears several pins were broken off on the right side, and the remaining base of pin did not perforate the paper. Please show us a back image, it will be much easier to see.
