Good Evening All! Attached are 2 postmarks that appear on the reverse of a Great Britain cover from 1848. Can someone identify the red one? Thanks for the help!

Thank you chipg. I had not seen a Charing Cross Branch before so that figure after the C had me a little puzzled. I appreciate the help!! |

tgswanner, Gentle suggestion: Please start with a complete image of the front and back sides, THEN a close-up image of the feature in question. We all like seeiing stamps/covers. You might also be pleasantly surpirsed by the tangential information that the paticipants can add about your item. |

The symbol after the "C" is a cross. Here is a clearer image of a pre-stamp version: |

The stamp bears what looks to be a London Inland Section cancel?
As far as I know, there were five London District Post Office branch offices, and they used cancels similar to the Charing Cross cancel. In addition to Charing Cross, there were Lombard Street, Old Cavendish Street, Borough and Vere Street branches.
As always, if someone has better info, don't hesitate to weigh in. |

Yes, London Inland Section Cancel #10. I was intrigued by the cancel I asked about and I hoped it was a Charing Cross which you confirmed. I am familiar with the others you mentioned EXCEPT Vere Street. I haven't seen that one yet. I have another #4 on cover with a LOMBARD STREET cancel and a CORK cancel...plus one unidentified cancel that I need help with also. I will post that one later in this thread. Again, to all, thanks for the help and for supplying knowledge to this hobby. |

This is the best image I have of Vere Street, "VS" and it isn't great. If someone has an image of a nice strike, I would like to see it. At least you can see what it looks like. Not surprisingly, "O.C.S" is Old Cavendish Street; "LS" is Lombard Street; "B" is Borough. |

Do you agree that the Lombard cancel is the 26th and Cork is the 29th? I was looking at Ireland marks and didn't spot that exact format. |

I would agree with that...that's what I had listed in my description in my album. I have about 20 covers with the CORK postmark (1845-1849) and they are all MONTH - DAY - YEAR. |

Sorry, I meant the "round, 4-line, no-town, year-in-the-middle" format. 3 lines, yes. 4 lines, including the town, yes. Not this one, yet, but I haven't spent any more time looking quite yet. Nice pieces. I'd trim away the red marks before soaking the stamps, lest you risk ink running. |
