A thread dedicated to the grand old lady, and to her designer.
See how many issues we can highlight in relation to her,
not forgetting her dedication by Emma Lazarus.

All welcome to contribute

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me;
I lift my lamp beside the golden door... "

Emma Lazarus

So reads the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty; the proud woman who stands at the entrance to the
New York harbor.
The Statue of Liberty was presented to the people of the United States by the people of France on July 4, 1884.
Since then she has welcomed millions of visitors and immigrants to the United States. In the early part of this
century especially, she served as a beacon for the countless Europeans who came to the United States to seek a
better life and, in turn, helped make the United States a better country.

The creation of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty is the largest statue ever made. She stands 151
feet high and weighs 450,000 pounds. Her right arm holds a great torch and her left arm grasps a tablet bearing the
date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

You may just note the engraver's touch.
She is looking down on us and smiling. Very cute.

Torch :

Is the torch open? No. The torch has been closed since the "Black Tom" explosion of July 30, 1916, which was one of the largest acts of sabotage to our nation prior to the event of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Many people think they've been there and confuse it with climbing a spiral staircase which goes to the crown. National Park Service staff must climb a narrow 40ft. ladder in order to maintain the floodlights which light the torch.

Tuvalu's contribution to the Statue of Liberty, Scott 406 (from a set of 9 sheets issued in 1986). The twin towers are in the background.

Nice one BeeSee,
can see the mesh of the torch, I wasn't aware of that.

Spock,
sounds like you had an exciting early life,
age is a time for reflection on that.
Personally, I would prefer a cave in Trincomalee than NY,
but that's just my pref.

Here is a "goldy" for you,
Bartholdi FDC with 22 carat gold foil stamp
