Good evening all, figured I would share a recently acquired cover. very interesting on the 3ct over paid. also the (26) looks more like a (26a) 10c Green, Ty. V (35). Vertical strip of three, used with 3c Dull Red, Ty. Il| (26), grid cancels, "Cortland Village N.Y. Jul. 3, 1861" circular datestamp, red "Aachen Franco" transit ties strip on small cover to Berlin via Prussian Closed Mail, red "N. York Am. Pkt. 7 Paid" 7c credit datestamp, Fine, handsome use, the proper rate was 30c but the extra 3c stamp was probably mistakenly intended to provide postage from Cortland Village to New York City, ex Piller. any and all information on this cover would be much appreciated. thanks Dom |

Your cover was sent via Prussian Closed Mail. 30c was the standard rate. You can usually tell a PCM cover by the rectangular Aachen entry marking. Franco indicates paid.
This is a 3c overpay. It was not unusual for people to be confused about foreign mail rates.
Your 3c stamp is either a bottom row 26 or a 26A. I saw that cover in yesterday's sale. I went after a different item in that sale. You certainly got a nice cover at the right price. |

Thank yoTXSTAMP, I appreciate everything you said on the cover. I agree with either a bottom row on the 26 or 26a, think more of a 26a because I can see on the left bottom in the perf what looks like a part of a frame of an adjoining stamp. there many great deals in that sale. I was very surprised at what some stuff went for. this cover was a great deal. very happy with it and the others I got. question, should I get a PF cert for it. since the cost will be cheap, or no need for one? |

PF cert - up to you. I dont see a need for one - but I will caveat that by saying I'm on my phone in bad light and can't really see details at the moment. Up to you but I'd lean towards "no reason to". |

@stampcrow - nice !!
The New York 1853 year date cds is well known and very collectible. Its use appears to have coincided with the Crystal Palace exhibition, inspiring theories they are related. It was only in use for about 2 weeks.
Year dated cds's before 1856 are hard to find. 1855's are obtainable, but anything that is a year-dated cds before 1855 is a really cool and nice item. |

That's a great example of the scarce 1853 year-date cancel, stampcrow! Thanks for showing it. I love the handwriting too. |

Thanks CC. Wanted to follow up on tx's mention of the Crystal Palace, does anyone have a cover to share here? I obviously have not been able to 'stampcrow' one for my collection. |

Rev, thanks for the link. I find it interesting that the first cover is addressed to a Thayer.
Chipg, great articles. I did look up a couple of the Siegel actions mentioned and noted that a Palace cover (no picture shown) sold for a bit over $1,000 back in 1972.

 One of the numerous versions of Canton fancy "Lyre" cancels. The Canton, Miss postmaster created quite a few collectible killers. |
