I saw this cover in an auction and was wondering what the stamp was. Any indication of whether it is genuine or not? Thanks in advance.

This is a Carrier Stamp.
Prior to July 1, 1863 the payment of regular postage only paid for transportation of mail between post offices.
Carrier Stamps were issued to pay for the service of the pick-up of mail by an official letter carrier from collection boxes and residences along his route, and the delivery of that mail to the local post office, or directly to an addressee in the same city. Sometimes carrier service included delivery of mail from the post office to an addressee.

These stamps are listed in the Scott Specialized catalog just before the Locals which is right before the Postal Stationery section.

For more information see:

or

If purchased from a reputable dealer or auction house, I have no reason to believe that this cover is not genuine. You will frequently see unused Locals and Carrier's Stamps on ebay for low prices and most of those are reprints.

I don't see anything to set off alarms about this cover. It appears similar to several that I have seen.

Thank you all. I was having a difficult time figuring out what it was and have been finally able to find it in my specialized catalog with your assistance. This item fits right into a particular collection of covers that I have so it was of particular interest to me.
