Years ago, someone told me that PSE actually had the best equipment and reference materials for expertizing the blackish-Violet shade. Understanding that the PF has traditionally been accepted as the authority for most philatelic questions, has anyone else heard this claim? Are there other US stamps for which PSE would be the preferred authority?
I use PSE only for grading and PF for everything else. PSE may have the best equipment, but I haven't heard anyone say that the equipment, expertise, and reference library at PF is any less good than PSE. Both are very good, and both have made mistakes from time to time.
In the mid 1990s a friend created a color chart for the 24c stamp, including one of the best (original) Blackish Violets (on cover), and he left it on indefinite loan to the PF.
As of a little over 10 years ago, the PF no longer has any of that. So at one point, they did have a good color chart. I don't know about now.
