NSW 2d Sesqui Koala Up A Tree Stamp

Could someone please help me with some information about this stamp, NSW Sesqui koala up a tree stamp. I would like to know how many used stamps there is? Also was it only 1937 these stamps came out and also what are they worth? I know about man with a tail stamp but can't find out anything about this stamp Are they scare or rare? I can't post a picture

You might want to be more specific about your sesquicentenial 2d stamp of Australia with a "Koala in a Tree" flaw. Apparently, it is the third stamp from the left bottom row.

You've asked quite a few questions about this stamp that was issued in a set of 3 on 1 October 1937.


According to my ACSC (Australia Commonwealth Specialist Catalog), there were 71,668,000 stamps issued of the 2d variety. They were very popular, and used for multiple purposes (mail within Australia, postcard rate to foreign countries, etc.) and you can easily find them mint and used on ebay.


The value for a nice, mint, unhinged stamp with no variety per the ACSC is AUD$8.00. Of course, you can find them for about AUD$2.00 or even less.

The "Koala up a tree" is actually listed in ACSC as "Colour flaw adjoining tree above officer at right". I admit that it does look more like a rabbit than a koala, but since I've never seen a vertical rabbit on a tree trunk, I think the koala is a more fitting description.

This stamp is fairly rare, since it is only known on one location on one sheet of the two types of printing of the 2d. So, maybe 56,000 of them were printed and distributed? The latest value for this stamp in my ACSC is AUD$400 in pristine mint condition, AUD$275 in mint, hinged, and AUD$175 if used. Of course, you can get them for less, but since they are more rare, you probably couldn't do better than 50% of these values.



The "Man with Tail" variety was probably issued in the same quantity, but is currently listed as more valuable. In fact, along with "Pantaloon" flaws, these stamps are valued at AUD$1500 in pristine mint condition, AUD$900-1000 in Mint, hinged, and AUD$100-200 in used condition.

All of these varieties are listed in Retouched and different states, so we can assume multiple printings and lower quantities than my earlier estimate of 56,000 of each variety.

Other varieties include a "Weak Entry at Right" and "Re-Entry to upper left frame". Since there are no listed retouches or repairs to those locations, they are much more common and probably were printed from day 1 to the last production date.


Since there was only one stamp issued, starting in 1 October 1937, I believe you are saying that you have two used copies, one cancelled in 1937 and one cancelled in 1938. Yes, that is entirely possible.

Unless you post your example, there isn't a lot more we can do to help you.

I have been mention on here with the stamps which is good. This is back in 2020 about. It is bigger than a 2 horse town and they weren't found in KGVI stamps but going on different sites, finding more things about the stamps is good

Hopefully one will find its way into your path. I know of a woman who sent me scans of 2 "koala in tree" varieties sometime in mid 2020, she lives in a literal two horse town in the Qld outback who found two used "koalas" in her small collection of KGVI stamps.

Hello again, Could someone please tell or show some pictures of the man with the Platoon how many stages there is I have seen the man with the tail many times but not the Platoon on his pants sorry if spelt wrong. This is for the NSW Sesqui stamps. For the people above it is a koala as rabbits don't climb trees here also I will put the other stamps up when I can get someone to help me

I searched for Australia 1937 Sesquicentennial. As I remember, he did post several times on the 1937 Sesquicentennial. Has not been on the site since last September.
