Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (born Dzhugashvili) 1878 - 1953
Georgian born Marxist revolutionary who led the Soviet Union with an
iron hand from 1924 to 1953 causing the death of millions.
Stalin was on the Time magazine Man of the Year for 1939 and 1942.
He was referred to frequently in the US as Uncle Joe.

Here is one for the 70th birthday of Joseph V. Stalin issued
by Czechoslovakia in 1949.

Julius Caesar, Roman Dictator from 49 to 44 BC. He was assassinated by senators who stabbed him over 23 times. His title at the end of his life was Dictator Perpetuo, leaving no ambiguity to this post. He appears on this Italian stamp from 1929.

The reality is that supporters of authoritarian leaders will deny that leader is authoritarian, even when that leader ticks all the boxes of authoritarianism. Let's not forget that Hitler abused a democratic system before he established a totalitarian state. Let's also not forget that some authoritarian systems call themselves 'democratic.' In recent years, some leaders have been copy-pasting the German rhetoric from 1939 substituting one country or leader for another.

I have friends and colleagues from countries that have leaders that tick all the boxes of being authoritarian and even of being latent dictators. A lot of them refuse to see it that way. I also very frequently visit a country where some people are very happy to call any political opponent a fascist.

Partime posted a variant of the adage that one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.
