I acquired this Large Queen stamp with a striking crown cancel. Can anyone tell me more about it?

In "Canadian Fancy Cancellations of the Nineteenth Century" by Day and Smythies, it is decribed as Serial 230, Jarrett 854, Neat crown in a sunburst of rays, used in various post offices in B.C. from 1880 onwards.

There are forgeries of the Victoria / Esquimault crowns, the hammers known used from 1880. Haven't a reference to compare at the moment, but this one's questionable. Perhaps another could do the legwork and chime in please.

Thanks to the work published by many generous researchers, the stamp collecting community in Canada offers a wealth of online resources. A simple online search led me to this, which should help you decide what you have.

I understand some people just want the answer, but one great thing about research is the information you never knew you needed.

The first question one should ask is, "Why is an 1880 or later cancel on an 1868 stamp".

Thank you for providing that link. It provides enough descriptors to indicate that the stamp is indeed a forgery. thanks again!

Riley111, The stamp, or the cancellation is a forgery? Or both?
