So here I will post a few nice copies of postally used Edward VII stamps from the west African colony of Gambia. The population of the country was half that of Mauritius (370,000) and at that time most of the country was illiterate. Finding copies of stamps that are not BATHURST postmarked, is challenging. Apparently, much of the mail left the colony on scheduled vessels being postmarked in transit, at nearby ports of call and at their destination. Gambia, at this time was both a Colony and a Protectorate. Near the capital of Bathurst, that was the colony. The much larger territory outside the capital was the protectorate. It would be interesting to see if anyone can post their used copies of this period, especially from the protectorate.
MCCARTHY ISLAND post office was located in the colony.
