Just searching through a pile of stamps found a stamp with a double precancel from Denver. Looks to be a normal PSS 71 cancel with a PSS L-11 IHS dated Mongomery Ward cancel as well on the stamp. Did / was Mongomery Ward allowed to precancel stamps with a town name in addition to just the date used and is this rare.

A photo will help explain what you mean by a double precancel. As in the example below, the MW datestamp should always appear along with a town name precancel, not by itself, if that is what you mean. The Denver precancel and/or MW datestamp may be stamped twice (doubled) and that is uncommon but wouldn't be described as rare or valuable.

This is what I have. It looks like MW printed their own Date, Town, & State on top of an already printed 71. Have one similar from Chicago with a double precancel
Or did the post office print it for them?

Ah, now I see what you mean, thanks for the picture. That is unusual, I've never seen one like that before, but that's not saying much. I collect precancels but not an expert so cannot comment on its scarcity.

I am like you. I just got a bunch of stamps from an older collectors collection and I am finding some anomalies to the PSS catalog I have. Its from 1990. But from what I have been able to find out there are lots of variants to collecting these stamps. I am just taking my best guess and will be posting some of my conundrums in the future. Thanks for your input.
