I recently discovered that this block from Russia was sitting in my collection with a Helsinki Finland cancellation. Have I identified this block correctly? This is not my area of knowledge, but did they use Russian stamps in Finland?
Russian stamps were used in Finland primarily between 1891 and 1917, during a period of increased Russian control (Russification) over the Grand Duchy of Finland. These included specifically designed stamps featuring Russian imperial arms, as well as standard Russian postage, particularly for mail traveling to Russia or abroad, replacing the Finnish-issued stamps. From January 1, 1892, for mail to Russia, and August 14, 1900, for foreign mail, the use of Russian stamps was mandatory, replacing previous Finnish issues.
Russian and Finnish stamps of the era can be identified by the currency noted on the stamps; "KON." on your block and "PEN." for Finland. Above that Finland used Marks, or "M."
Parcelpostguy - I kind of figured that out from the Scott Catalogue, so I was fairly certain this was a Russian block, but nice to have some confirmation from the community.
