Picked this up at the MSDA show in Indianapolis this morning. I would have been more than content at the $40 marked price, but when the dealer offered it for $30, it was icing on the cake.

IYKYK...

Attractive stamps! Have shied away from Iran/Persia because apparently there are a lot of forgeries out there and have not taken the time to learn so rightfully spent elsewhere. Love these though.

Can you provide an explanation as to what these are please?

These are briefly mentioned in Scott in a sidebar which reads:

Quote:
In 1909 two sets of 16 stamps were prepared for the coronation of Ahmad Shad Qajar. The first set with liion and sun high values and gold borders was for postal use, while the second set with city gate high values and silver borders was inscribed "SERVICE". While neither set was placed in use, both were sold to collectors at a later date.

The stamps are actually highly collectible and bring strong money.

The Persiphila catalogue volume 1 by Mehrdad Sadri (essential for anyone delving into Iranian material) lists them. I only have a 2007 first edition, so the values may be out of date. I need to update my set, but the ebooks for the 4 volumes run about $400. Printed books about double that.

The stamps are valued between US$20 and US$75 per stamp depending on denomination, and are not known reprinted or counterfeited.

I always keep an eye out for them in collections.

EDIT:

Here's a current ebay auction for 6 of the stamps, at $142 with 9 hours left.

Here's a sold listing for 8 of them. The listing says CA$470 (US$343) but since it was a best offer, we don't know the actual selling price.

Ahmad Shad Qajar looks pretty hirsute for an eleven-year-old. Is this Mohammad Ali Shah Qajar (deposed July 1909)? Image search has him as Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, the one with the 83 wives, who he photographed without their veils.
