Am just wondering if anyone else here has tried to convert multiple images of a 3D object into a single panoramic representation.

I tried getting AI (Google Gemini 3) to do the work, but after several frustrating prompt attempts, it revealed that while it understood what I was wanting, it didn't have the tools "under the hood" to create what I wanted.

The closest I've come is with the now deprecated Microsoft Ice software. I'm wondering if there are other tools that can do a better job.

What follows are 6 images taken of an 1898 pill box with revenue stamp affixed, rotating the box slightly so that there is overlap across the images. The last image is the resulting Microsoft Ice panorama.

I was hoping to create a representation of what the label would look like (with revenue affixed) when laid flat, rather than having to destroy the wrapped box to do so.

Any suggestions?

You did a pretty good job. Looks fine.
You may be able to get a slightly better image if you take more individual photos, that is, rotate the object a smaller amount for each photo.
Almost any photo editing program can stitch photos together. Some programs allow the use of different perspectives which may provide an improvement. And some allow manual positioning of the photos.
One experiment you can try is to position your object on end and use the panoramic feature of your cell phone camera while you move around the object.

I'm impressed. I cannot find any evidence of the stitching, and I have diffculty just stitching together two pieces of an oversize document that cannot be scanned on my smaller scanner.

I need to check out ICE and see how it would work for me.

I use the Paint-dot-net tool for stitching flat scans together. Years ago I had a version of Photoshop but lost it in an OS upgrade.

What do others used for this purpose these days? Preferably something affordable.

Affinity is a very powerful alternative to photoshop that was recently made free for all.

If anyone is looking for an authoritative download link for the 64-bit version of Microsoft ICE for Windows rather than taking a chance on possibly sketchy download sites, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine has links to the original Microsoft download that are still active:

https://web.archive.org/web/20190223050207/https://download.microsoft.com/down...-Windows.msi

32-bit:

https://web.archive.org/web/20190309221948/https://download.microsoft.com/down...-Windows.msi

It was and still is, free software, although no longer updated or supported by Microsoft. The last version was released in 2015, but it still works fine on Windows 11.

ChatGpt suggested a free software called Hugin with the projection set to cylindrical. I'm on an iPhone, so can't really check it out right now. Just something else to consider
