All of these stamps are great -- this is probably my favorite thread on SCF.

The Faroe Heinesen is really spectacular.

jorgesurcl, thanks for the info on the UN stamp.

The printer Enschedé was noted in my old Michel Übersee but not the engraver Karl Seizinger

Three 1.60K via multicolour engraving .

Engraver : Ladislav Jirka

Scott 1643 - 1645

Florian mentioned in another forum that there were hidden names in the design in two of these stamps.

STAPL or STARL ?

Looks like GELLNER, for perhaps Ernest André Gellner philosopher and social anthropologist ?

Perhaps Florian can help us out.

lithograving - Thank you for the very fine images. The Tatra National Park set was designed by the graphic artist Jaroslav Lukavský (1924 - 1984), a great admirer of the High Tatras.

The name on the Scott 1643 stamp reads ŠTÁFL honouring the artist Otakar Štáfl (1884 - 1945), another great lover of these mountains. One of his paintings dedicated to the High Tatras appeared on the 4 Kč and 5 Kč values of the 1927 definitives engraved by Karel Seizinger.

I believed that the name GELLNER on the Scott 1644 stamp referred to the poet and graphic artist František Gellner (1881 - 1914) but having studied his biography I am doubtful. The designer of the stamp Jaroslav Lukavský may have associated this particular locality in the High Tatras with whichever person bearing this name, either the poet or just a friend of his.

Just consider another stamp designed by Jaroslav Lukavský (and engraved by Josef Herčík), the 5 Kčs PRAGA 1968 airmail issued in blocks of 4 in 1967 as part of a set commemorating World Postage Stamp Exhibitions preceding PRAGA 1968 and look for allusions and joke-making in its design.
