Raymond Coatantiec (1933- ) is a French artist and engraver who studied with René Cottet at L'école Estienne (the Graduate School of Arts and Printing) in Paris. Here are images of four examples of Coatantiec's engraving (and also some of his design) work on stamps issued by France. - nethryk Two stamps depicting historic postal buildings, designed by Raymond Coatantiec, and issued on April 28, 1990, Scott Nos. 2218 & 2219, Y&T Nos. 2642 & 2643. Mâcon  Cerizay  Emblem of the Grand Lodge of Scottish Rites, designed by French artist Michel Durand-Mégret, and issued on November 5, 1994 to commemorate the centenary of the Grand Lodge in France, Scott No. 2446, Y&T No. 2912.  View of Bi[t]che (censorship!), Moselle, designed by French graphic artist Serge Hochain, and issued on May 25, 1996, Scott No. 2526, Y&T No. 3018.  |

Thank you for the post, Stampgal...
and the mention of Czeslaw Slania; I was unaware of the site devoted to his works ... what an artist and master craftsman.
I had never considered building a collection by the works of an Engraver. I think you have given me an idea.

Hal - I have found that "collecting by engraver" is an endlessly fascinating way to enjoy our great hobby. I would encourage you to pursue it, too. Here is an image of another fine example of Czeslaw Slania's engraving skill: A portrait of William Heinesen (1900-1991), Faroese writer, composer and visual artist, designed after an uncredited photograph, and issued by Faroe Islands on June 6, 1988, Scott No. 177, Facit No. 172. I especially like the way Slania rendered the lines around Heinesen's eyes. - nethryk  |
