Did Enschedé use a Goebel press for their line-engraved stamps?
Unfortunately, I have never seen images at sharp resolutions of such stamps as Netherlands S.G. C656-C660, C708-C712, 748, 801, C826-C830, 1096 or Luxembourg S.G. C533-C534, 571, 637-639, 661, 695-696, 779-782.
Line-engraved stamps actually fall into different categories depending on the type of press used in their production (and even on their printers' expertise).
Florian, the Goebel reel-fed rotary presses JESSP had were all [2 of them] for 5-colours photogravure! Last year their last stamps in photogravure got printed. All stamps will be now in offset-litho either sheet-fed on presses like the Heidelberger Speedmaster or MAN Roland or Mitsubishi. Their Müller-Martini does reel-fed printing since 2010 but you hardly see a Dutch stamp printed on that press. The Banknote division of JESP had KoeBau-Giori presses [probably] as used for the Euro notes. groetjes, Rein |

Born, and issued by Czech Republic on November 8, 1993, Scott No. 2907. Bonuses: Smokers, horned animals, birds, fruit and angels on stamps.  Jan Kubelík (1880-1940), Czech violinist and composer, designed by K. Demel, and issued by Czech Republic on January 19, 1994, Scott No. 2912.  Decorated Christmas tree, designed by A. Khunova, and issued by Czech Republic on November 8, 1995, Scott No. 2976.  Cyclist and map, designed by R. Brun, and issued by Slovakia on May 30, 1996, Scott No. 246.  Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), Italian-born radio pioneer, designed by O. Soloa, and issued by Slovakia on April 15, 1997 to commemorate the centenary of radio, Scott No. 269.  |

KirkS & canadian - I'm glad that you enjoyed viewing some of my images of Phillip Goodwyn Hall's engraved stamps, posted above on page 110. Also, thanks to canadian for pointing out that Hall was a picture (vignette) engraver. Sadly, the British Commonwealth is rather poorly represented in my stamp collection. However, in future I will make an effort to sprinkle images of some more of these engraved beauties (KGVI pictorials in particular) in various threads.  - nethryk |

I want to correct an error I made on page 111 regarding the engraver Karl Wolf when I said : Quote:
Karl Wolf's engraving career began in 1947 and between 1949 till 1963 he engraved a few stamps for the German Democratic Republic Wolf actually engraved his first stamp and the first Czechoslovakian stamp to be printed by way of steel engraving in 1923A set of 4 semipostals/charity was issued for the 5th Anniversary of the Republic. Rein, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing, maybe it's the quality of the scans.
Are you saying that the numbers and lettering are screened and the portraits etched?
On the detail you show from the 25c+8c Michel 676, the crosshatched
area doesn't look a lot different from other "normal" engravings
in my opinion.
What I do notice though is a kind of "rough" or "coarse" type of engraving which suits the subjects portrayed.
They are after all based on Rembrandt's etchings.

In Linn's Stamp News October 2012 issue is an article concerning the 1962 Hammarskjold inverts. It's a good read written by Kathleen Wunderly but nowhere in the article are the engravers mentiond. Engravers just don't get any respect. Does anyone remember Rodney Dangerfield ? Designer: Herbert Sanborn Engravers: Charles A. Brooks ( vignette) Kenneth C. Wiram (lettering) The original on the left Scott 1203 and the reprint Scott 1204  Detail from Scott 1203  Detail from Scott 1204  Here the writer explains what went wrong with the printing which created the inverts. To me it appears that there was a misuse of the Giori Presses.  |

I recently bought a very nice collection that included these items (one colour shown). I believe they were issued in 1949 as part of the centenary of France poste.  |
