Hello again I've been looking at the stamps engraved by Ferdinand Lorber. His work has appeared in this thread several times - mainly his Austrian stamps. But I see he also worked for Liechtenstein, and I'm very impressed by the two high value stamps issued by that country in 1933 and 1935. These show Prince Franz I and his wife Elsa. An online catalogue tells me that the print run for each was about 20,000 (approx. one for each Liechtensteiner!). They look really good - I assume they are engraved and recess printed? I looked on ebay and see that they fetch high prices - about £100 for Elsa and £40 for Franz - though one seller is asking £583 for the two plus another 1935 high value - not by Lorber. Does anyone have scan of these? |

Hi Strider, I don't have the actual two stamps you mention (which are indeed hand-engraved by Ferdinand Lorber and recess-printed), but here's a tip: if you just want to enjoy the engravings, why not forget about the expensive ones and go for the reissues of 1938 and 1947? The same two stamps from the 1933 definitive set were reissued to mark the death of both Francis (1938) and Elsa (1947). These two are much cheaper and the only thing that's different is that they're printed in a different colour. If you want to read more about Lorber, why not also check out my blog page on him? You'll find it here: http://stampengravers.blogspot.co.u...rdinand.html |

Here are images of the two stamps in a set featuring portraits of Franz Joseph II, Prince of Liechtenstein (1906-1989) and his wife, Princess Georgina (1921-1989), designed (respectively) by H. Schütz and L. Pfeffer, engraved by Herbert Toni Schimek (1905-1982), and issued by Liechtenstein on April 5, 1955, Scott Nos, 287 & 288. Historical note: The prince died a mere 26 days after his wife passed away. - nethryk |

Thanks to you both! I did indeed go for the reissues - which are affordable for me. This is the second time I've done this - I have the red reissued wedding journey - the 1931 WIPA blue issue is way beyond my resources. Btw - since I began Collecting by Engraver I've discovered Collecting SG Catalogues - I now have Scandinavia, France and colonies, Austria and Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland, Benelux, and South East Asia. Portugal and Spain is still in the post - I think Amazon must have sent it by camel. But Liechtenstein is in with Italy and Switzerland. Suppose that'll be the next one ... |

Here is one of the excellent portraits on stamps which Austria issued in abundance over the years. Some might find them boring compared to a pictorial scene but in my opinion it shows the best of the art of engraving. Alfred Nefe cut in such very fine lines which brings out so much detail.
