@graphis

Great sharp scans thanks for showing them.
That vibrant orange-red on that Cameroon jumps right
out at you.
Just shows that using a light background looks
good and in some instances maybe even better than black.

I know many people on this thread are lovers of the Spanish stamps of the 1960s, for good reason. I just added the 1963 Poblet Monastery set to the database but I can't find any details for these at all. They are too good to be left unacknowledged so if anyone knows anything about these, I'd love to hear about it.
They are Gibbons 1555-8, Scott 1155-8

View from the courtyard

Gibbons just lists this as "tomb".

I saw an article today on the UK Guardian newspaper site regarding the annual banknote award which this year went to New Zealand.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-of-the-year

This Swedish 20 Kronor note was also shown.

Anyone recognise the engraving?

jjarmstrong47 - The engraving work for the 1963 Spain Real Monasterio de Santa María de Poblet issue, Edifil Nos. 1494-97, is jointly credited to three Spanish engravers: Daniel Carande Boto, Antonio Manso Fernández, and Germán Martín Orbe, about each of whom I have previously posted articles in this thread. - nethryk

jjarmstrong47,those sixties Spanish stamps are beautifully
engraved and printed using just 2 colours.Amazing.
Yes it would be nice to know who engraved the set.
I see nethryk came to the rescue while I was typing.

Credit also has to be given to whoever was responsible
for picking the colours, was it the designer, the engraver or
someone in the printing department?
They must have had various colour trials before they
finally decided on a suitable combination.

The Monastery of Poblet is actually in Catalonia (just 100 km South from Barcelona, my town).
It was founded around 1150 by the Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona, to help repopulating the land after muslims were expelled. Its name comes from the tree Populus nigra (Poplar, in English). A very nice Gothic building. The 40 monks still living there, belong to the Order of Cister.
The tomb is one of the many of the Barcelona Counts Dinasty (850-1410), that ruled Catalonia and become, by mariage, kings of Arago and also Sicily and Sardinia. The Poblet Monastery become the Catalan Kings' Vault.
The arch is from the cloister of the abbey, which is one of the most emblematic sites of Catalonia.

Since 1714 it is under Spanish rule, like the rest of Catalonia.

For you soccer (football) fans out there...
France 1938-Scott 349
Engraver: Georges-Leo Degorce

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA English: International Federation of Association Football) is the governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer. FIFA is responsible for the organisation of football's major international tournaments, notably the World Cup which commenced in 1930 and the Women's World Cup which commenced in 1991.
FIFA was founded in 1904 to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The first World Cup in the world was in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Headquartered in Zürich, its membership now comprises 209 national associations. Member countries must each also be members of one of the six regional confederations into which the world is divided: Africa, Asia, Europe, North & Central America and the Caribbean, Oceania and South America.

France first hosted the World Cup in 1938...Italy won...then hosted the event again 60 years later...this time France won the cup.

What a great photograph! Thanks for showing it, Canadian. My guess is that it was taken in the late 70s. Enrique Paniagua Martinez produced his first stamp there in 1975 and both Mata Martin (born 1931) and Terriza de Coca (born 1929) look to be about mid forties.

When looking at engraved stamps every day, as I do, I just love it when I can visualise the person who produced them.

I've been discussing these with AKPhilately as my catalogue did not have all the details. As a fan of Samuel Louis (Sem) Hartz, he was able to enlighten me, as I felt sure he would. Hartz designed and engraved this Surinam set from 1940. They were printed by Joh Enshede and Sons, Haarlem.

They were used to raise money for leper relief and baby care through the Social Relief Fund. Featured are four women from different ethnic groups.
