"Ahem, I refer the right honourable gentlemen to my answer given before, just below the original post."

I admit it! I hadn't made the connection. So that source just adds to the mystery yet if that is put out by the postal museum, you would think they would know.

On another note, I doubt if I would have been a fan of the Vichy government if I'd been alive back then but they put out some great stamps. It seems a shame that beauty from Cameroun was never used. Mazelin was an engraver that you don't really hear people calling their favourite but he engraved some wonderful stamps.

Hear, hear, and his stamp-related work (loads of cinderella labels) is fascinating too. Truly the dark horse among French engravers.

I absolutely love that Algerian Pheulpin stamp, though, that's my favourite of this lot and so is he.

graphis, thanks for showing those scans from the Master Decaris.

I tried with the white background but it just hasn't worked
for me so far.

When I see any of these IMPRIMERIE DES TIMBRES-POSTE - PARIS
printed stamps produced for the colonies and then ex-colonies
they are usually in 3 colours from the early sixties to seventies.

I always wonder how they decided what 3 colours to use.
Many times the combinations worked but sometimes the colours
clashed and/or were kinda garish.
Seems almost like the boss said " OK we've got 3 colours, lets use
them whether we need them or not"
At least that's my opinion.

On the Monaco ones the colour combinations really
works and the different engravers all produced very fine
detailed stamps compared to the coarser engravings
for the Ivory coast.

There were usually loads of different colour proofs made, with various combinations trialled in various sheets. So it must have been a matter of the deciding person having very bad taste!

The scan doesn't make it clear but they are all different shades (of gooseberry green, as Royal Mail would probably call it).

The Swiss PTT produced a special presentation booklet for the 1932 Gotthard Railway issue which, besides both mint and used blocks of the stamps, included three die proofs of Karl Bickel's engravings. The booklets, of which only 800 were made, were handed out to high-ranked officials and guests of the jubilee festivities.
