I've been going through old threads, trying to fill gaps in the database and found Richard Downey's input to the other, now deceased thread. I found that his grandfather had designed as well as engraved this stamp, a detail that is not shown on the official Canada website. The site only says it was designed from a photograph by Marcus Adams. This is only a small detail but I was quite pleased when I found it. It is a beautiful stamp. His photograph of his grandfather's notebook for this stamp can be found here: http://www.stampmagazine.co.uk/albu...333&p=474124 |

Quote: The site only says it was designed from a photograph by Marcus Adams. jjarmstrong47, if you're referring to the Canadian Postal Archives site, it does mention that the stamp was engraved by Alfred J. Downey. http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/n...anet/020117/ a href= /go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/020117030608 target= _blank rel= nofollow 020117030608 /a _e.html&r=1&f=G&SECT3=POST There are also various production details if you click on Documents related to this stamplike this die proof below. |

Sorry, lithograving, I didn't make myself clear. I already had Downey as the engraver and the reference to Marcus Adams but they do not name a designer and there is a lot more in the design than just what is in a photograph. In Downey's notebook he clearly states that he designed and engraved the stamp. Edit: Here is the page just in case the other site loses it. |

Today I was loading stamps from countries not generally famous for their engraved issues. This set from Jersey was produced by De La Rue. I thought I had read some of the details but have been unable to find them. If anyone can fill in the gaps on these it would be great. They are worth showing anyway. Jersey 1974, John Wesley. SG 111, Scott 103 Jersey 1974, Sir William Hillary. SG 112 Scott 104 Jersey 1974, Canon Wace. SG 113 Scott 105 Jersey 1974, Sir Winston Churchill. SG 114 Scott 106 |

The other country surprised me as their modern issues seem to have little to do with the country but do supply lots of large colourful pictures if you wish to wallpaper the privy. This is a shame as their earlier issues showed great promise as this set shows. I'm talking about Mongolia who, for some reason, slipped in an engraved set in 1968. I have no details about the production. Mongolia 1968, Berries - Wild Rose Black Currant Strawberries Apart from a souvenir sheet that they made in 1965 for the WIPA exhibition in Vienna, these are the only recess printed stamps I can find from Mongolia which seems a great shame. |

The Jersey set, according to Gene Hessler's The International Engraver's Line: Wesley: unknown Hillary: Henry Carradine Wace: Robin Taylor Churchill: Stanley Doubtfire My question of the day: Does anyone recognise this signature? The stamp was engraved by Waterlow and issued in 1929. |

I don't recognise the signature but the size is important. The Waterlow printing was 34.5 x 23.5mm but there was another printing by Barreiro and Ramos which was 31.5 x 21.5mm. That much size difference could mean that it was re-engraved and the signature could be Barreiro. Hard to tell from the scan but it looks like Waterlow printed at the base. |

graphis, that Monaco Scott 1949 by Pierre Albuisson looks similar to stipple engraving which canadianmentioned on page 186. For the Iceland, Michel Europa lists only the printer De la Rue, no engraver. Great stamps & scans. |
