Sven Ewert (1895-1959) was a Swedish master engraver who produced numerous stamps for Sweden and a few for other Nordic countries. Here are images of some examples of his engraving work; all but one of these stamps were issued by Sweden. - nethryk Bible Jubilee, issued on May 11, 1941, Scott No. 316, Facit No. 328B. Saint Bridget of Sweden, born Birgitta Birgersdotter (1303-1373), issued on October 7, 1941, Scott No. 328, Facit No. 336. Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786), Swedish pharmacist and chemist, designed by Sven Ewert, and issued on December 9, 1942, Scott No. 337, Facit No. 343. Oak Tree, Savings Bank 150th Anniversary, issued on October 27, 1945, Scott No. 367, Facit No. 364. Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), Danish astronomer, issued by Denmark on December 14, 1946, Scott No. 300, Facit No. 321. Christopher Polhem (1661-1751), Swedish inventor, after a painting by Swedish artist Georg Engelhard Schröder (1684-1750), issued on August 30, 1951, Scott No. 427, Facit No. 438A. Anna Maria Lenngren (1754-1817), Swedish poet, after a portrait medallion by Swedish artist Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814), issued on June 18, 1954, Scott No. 467, Facit No. 456B. Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858-1940), Swedish author and the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, issued on November 20, 1958, Scott No. 534, Facit No. 499. |

Nethryk, I had never seen the Swedish ones up close, thanks for showing them.
Its interesting when one thinks that Ewert was only 64 when he died. He might have continued working until his seventies as have other engravers and perhaps Slania wouldn't have gotten the chance when he did.
Arne Wallhorn was already learning the ropes under Ewert and the Swedish State Printer perhaps wouldnt have kept Slania on.
I read somewhere that Slania was by 1959 ready to leave Sweden and start working for the Canadian Bank Note Co. That would have been a great team, Slania and Yves Baril.

There is a reason why Sven Ewert engraved the 1946 Tycho Brahe stamp instead of Johannes Britze ( 1895- 1969) who had engraved every Danish stamp from 1927 until 1944.
Days after the end of the war Britze was arrested for continuing to work during the German occupation and suspected Nazi sympathies. He never engraved another Danish stamp. |

lithograving - My pleasure. And thanks for sharing your information about Johannes Britze's postwar problems and why his brilliant engraving career ended so abruptly. Who knew? In France, Pierre Gandon's career was nearly derailed because during the German occupation he had engraved a couple of obnoxious propaganda semi-postal stamps glorifying the infamous Tricolor Legion, French volunteers who joined the Wehrmacht to fight in Russia. Here are images of those stamps, which were issued by France on October 12, 1942, Scott Nos. B147 & B148, Y&T Nos. 565 & 566. - nethryk |

I'll also post images of a couple more of his stamps in relevant topical threads here. - nethryk Hans Tausen (1494-1561),religious reformer, issued on August 10, 1936, Scott No. 255, Facit No. 276. Bertel Thorvaldsen (ca. 1770-1844), Danish-Icelandic sculptor, issued on November 17, 1938, Scott No. 264, Facit no. F286. Crown Princess Ingrid with Princess Margrethe, semi-postal issued on April 16, 1941, Scott No. B12, Facit No. 292. Swiatoj Pietr, ship of explorer Vitus Bering (1681-1741), issued on November 27, 1941, Scott No. 278, Facit No. 295. Condor airplane, 25th anniversary of the Danish Aviation Company (DDL), issued on October 29, 1943, Scott No.289, Facit No. 310. |

Some more of Johannes Britze's work. Churches on a definitive set issued in 1944. The one below is the last stamp Britze engraved before he was dismissed from the Danish State Printer. Issued 25 September 1944 for the 300th Birth Anniversary of the astronomer Ole Romer. Britze was also the designer. |

As was mentioned above, the Swede Sven Ewert engraved some Danish stamps post WWII In addition the Danish State Printer also used the services of the Frenchman Henry Lucien Cheffer. Two from the set below were engraved by Cheffer but the 20+5 is the work of Bent Jacobsen who for some reason didn't add his John Henry on the bottom right. Jacobsen starting in 1949 engraved most of the Danish stamps until Slania came along in 1962 and you know the rest. Issued on May, 4, 1947 Three semi-postal (charity) stamps honouring the resistance movement and those who lost their life during the war and as sailors in the allied fleet |

The UPU stamp issued on October 9. 1949 was the first stamp Jacobsen is accredited with. For some reason Danish stamps during these years only have the initials of the designers & engravers. This changed I believe when Slania started engraving. He certainly wanted to receive proper credit and deserved it. Speaking of Slania, here is the first of many stamps he engraved for Denmark. Regarding Henry Cheffer (1880-1957), here are images of more stamps designed (except as noted) and engraved by this French artist and engraver who was still going strong right up until his death at age 76. - nethryk Louis Gustave Binger, French military officer and explorer who claimed the Côte d'Ivoire for France, issued for use in Ivory Coast on October 25, 1937, Scott No. 159. Miners, issued by France on April 20, 1938, Scott No. 343, Y&T No. 390. Saint Malo, issued by France on May 16, 1938, Scott No. 347, Y&T No. 394. Jacob Christian Jacobsen (1811-1887), Danish industrialist and philanthropist best known for founding the brewery Carlsberg, designed by Viggo Bang, and issued by Denmark on November 10, 1947, Scott No. 304. Léon Charles Albert Calmette (1863-1933), French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist, semi-postal issued by France on June 18, 1948, Scott No. B232, Y&T No. 814. Cloister of Saint Wandrille Abbey, issued by France on May 18, 1949, Scott No. 623, Y&T No. 842. Stagecoach, semi-postal issued by France on March 8, 1952, Scott No. B266, Y&T No. 919. I just want to thank all of you who've contributed to a BEAUTIFUL thread. The images are striking. Here are a couple I've not seen, believe fit the thread, and would like to know more about, please. |

Barb those are great scans and worthy additions to this thread. It's great to have more members posting and now with you contributing and Anthony joining in again its going to make this thread even more enjoyable. As far as who the engravers were I can't help but I'm sure Nethryk will have some info. |

Anthony those joint issues are real nice. I like the combination of steel engraving (black) with the multicolour offset. In this case there is no difference in quality between the Australian one engraved by Slania and the Swedish one by Lars Sjööblom. I think the later is a superb engraver, maybe not in Slania's league but then again who was ? Speaking about joint issues here is a link to a site strictly about joint issues and also has lists of Swedish engravers. http://www.jointstampissues.net/jou...2006_May.pdf |
