@ nethryk. Amazing that Cheffer did such fine engraving work until
he was 76 years old.

What's odd though is the fact that he engraved the first French
stamp in 1929 when he was already 49 years old.
According to my Michel his first was the definitives 5 Fr & 20 Fr
Michel 240, 242 issued in 1929/1930
But then again perhaps he worked on the Colonial issues?

lithograving - An astute observation! Before engraving his first stamp for France, Henry Cheffer had already engraved a number of stamps for other countries. Here is an image of Ahmad Shah Qajar (1898-1930), Cheffer's first-ever engraved stamp (vignette only; the frame is typographed), and one of the values in a definitive set issued by Persia (Iran) in 1911, Scott No. 483.

bfranton - It's always good to hear that other collectors are also enthused about engraved stamps. Here is some information that I have found about the beautiful stamps you posted above.

- nethryk

"Fang Warrior" is a typographed (not engraved) stamp designed by L. Colmet-Daage, and was issued for use in Gabon in 1910, Scott No. 33, SG No. 31. Here are other typographed stamps on which the designs are credited to L. Colmet-Daage:

1908 Martinique - 1c-20c - Woman, Scott Nos. 62-73.
1910 Gabon - 25c-75c - Libreville, Scott Nos. 39-45
1922 Martinique - 0,01-0,05 - Woman (overprinted), Scott Nos. 105-07.

"Ubangi Woman" and "Basket-maker" were both designed by Belgian painter and sculptor Émile Vloors (1871-1952), engraved and printed by American Bank Note Company, and issued for use in Belgian Congo from 1923 to 1927, Scott Nos. 88 & 93, SG Nos. 120 & 125.

There is a full numeric series of the Vloors and they are lovely. I don't think I know what a typographed stamp is, but shall investigate. Thank you. Here are a few of the others from the series. I just love the simplicity of the images.

This thread must be one of the best threads I have ever followed - on any site.

It may seem that interest has diminished, but that is definitely not so; I think most of us a rendered speechless by the beauty you two have been parading before our eyes.

An incredible effort!

Well done and thank you!

Perf14, thanks for those kind words and encouragement.
For me it's great fun scanning the stamps and learning the story
behind their production.
There are many stamps I've had for 50+ years but didn't really
appreciate their beauty until I started scanning them and seeing
the greater detail.
It makes me aware of the work and craftsmanship involved
in producing these beauties.

bfranton : Perhaps this might help differentiating print types.

Austria issued these four stamps with exactly the same
design using the four main methods used to print stamps.

ENGRAVED Scott 620

TYPOGRAPHY also called LETTERPRESS Scott 621

OFFSET/LITHOGRAPHY Scott 622

PHOTOGRAVURE Scott 630B

Notice that on the typographed one there is still the engraver's
(Georg Wimmer) name whereas the lithographed & photogravure ones
only have the designer's , Hans Strohofer.
Reason being is that even though it's printed typography the die
was cut in relief (raised) by an engraver

The first 3 were printed by the Austrian State Printer.

The smaller photogravure coil/roll stamp was printed by Harrison & Sons.

Getting away from Denmark for awhile here is one of the few
engraved Brazilian stamps.
I have no idea who the engraver was since I believe the
the B. Lancetta on the lower right was the designer not the engraver.

Perf14 - Thanks. Ditto lithograving's remarks. I'm having a ball.

lithograving - Nice comparative presentation on the results of the four different printing methods.

I would agree that your Brazil Santa Marta Lighthouse stamp, issued on July 29, 1976, Scott No. 1466, RHM No. C-917, was designed, but almost certainly not engraved, by Bernardino da Silva Lancetta. I don't have an example of this stamp in my own collection. I will let you know if I am able to determine who did engrave it from a reliable Brazilian source.

Lingering yet awhile in France: Pierre Munier (1889-1962) is somewhat of a mystery man; he seems to have been an intensely private person and there is not much available information about him. Here are images of some stamps designed (except as noted) and engraved by Pierre Munier over the course of his long career.

- nethryk

Keep and gate at Vincennes, issued by France on May 16, 1938, Scott No. 346, Y&T No. 393.

Sowing, a semi-postal issued by France on December 2, 1940, Scott No. B105, Y&T No. 467. Check out the definition in those arm muscles!

Procession of Sainte Dévote (died ca. 303 AD), semi-postal designed by Georges-Léo Degorce, and issued by Monaco on January 27, 1944, Scott No. B78.

Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), French mathematician and philosopher, semi-postal designed after a portrait of Pascal by French-Flemish engraver Gérard Edelinck (1640-1707), and issued by France on July 31, 1944, Scott No. B181, Y&T No. 614.

Young woman and Bamako Dike, French Sudan, issued for use in French West Africa in 1947, Scott No. 37.

Swimmer, designed by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Monaco on July 1, 1948 to publicize the 1948 Olympic Games, Scott No. 208.

Gustave Auguste Ferrié (1868-1932), French general, engineer, and telecommunications pioneer, issued by France on June 13, 1949, Scott No. 628, Y&T No. 847.

Gulf of Ajaccio, Corsica, designed by Paul-Pierre Lemagny (1905-1977), a winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, and issued by France on July 3, 1954, Scott No. 724, Y&T No. 981.

Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, often called simply Turenne (1611-1675), Marshal of France, and the Turenne Farm in Bazeille, semi-postal designed by Charles Mazelin, and issued by France on June 11, 1960, Scott No. B342, Y&T No. 1258.
