Antonio Manso Fernández (1934- ) was a veritable prodigy as a student of the graphic arts and as an engraver. He had a brilliant career at the Spanish Royal Mint, ultimately rising to the very top in 1993. Here are four examples of Manso's work for Spain.

- nethryk

James I the Conqueror (1208-1276), King of Aragon, Count of Barcelona, and Lord of Montpellier from 1213 to 1276, issued on September 24, 1963, Scott Mo. 1183, Edifil No. 1522.

Don Juan of Austria (1547-1578), military hero, victor at the battle of Lepanto, issued on October 7, 1971, Scott No. 1690, Edifil No. 2055.

Battle of Lepanto (1571), issued on October 7, 1971, Scott No. 1691, Edifil No. 2056. Note: I recently read an excellent book on this period entitled Empires of the Sea, by Roger Crowley.

Ventura Rodríguez Tizón (1717-1785), Spanish architect and artist, issued on January 29, 1973, Scott No. 1746, Edifil No. 2119..

Lovely Spanish stamps nethryk especially the Battle of Lepanto.

Don John of Austria was the illegitimate son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and half brother of Philip II, King of Spain.

I also borrowed a couple of Spanish history books recently from the library about the Moors and the Reconquista.
Fascinating stuff except the slant of the books was that everything
the Moors did was good and the reconquest was bad for Spain.
Revisionist History in my opinion.

I have been enjoying this thread like a kid stuck in a lolly shop and I thought that I should pull my weight and post a few scans of my own. Unfortunately I am not as knowledgeable as the other posters, for example my first post is a lovely stamp, but I have no idea who was the engraver...matter of fact I am not even sure of the Country of issue...

Another effective engraving, but I wish everyone would publish the engraver's name on the bottom right hand corner!

The next one is from Canada but I think it's only partly engraved, it's a beautiful stamp nonetheless;

The first 1d King George V, engraved by Harrison in Australia. When he arrived he was highly disappointed as he had been promised a modern printing facility but what he got was a...

And finally a scan of my favourite stamp, but I have seen too many great stamps on this thread that are almost equally beautiful. A while ago I saw on ebay that they were selling re-prints made using the original plates...so, since I will never be able to buy an original copy, this one (actually four as it came in a block) will keep me happy:

and a just a closer look:

lithograving - Thanks, and nice follow-up images showing Don Juan's family ties. Yes, I have noticed that there is a lot of historical revisionism going around, especially in US public schools. Fortunately, Roger Crowley calls 'em pretty straight - no PC treatment for either side, Christians or Turks. - nethryk

Perf14 - I'm glad you have decided to jump in with some engraved stamp images!

First, as for the 50c Admiral Nimitz USA definitive, Scott No. 1869, it was engraved by Thomas R. Hipschen; I posted several other examples of his work on page 8 of this thread.

Louis S. Schofield, who was active at the BEP during the 1920s and 30s, engraved the vignette on the 2c George Rogers Clark USA issue, Scott No. 651. Here are images of more examples of Schofield's vignette engraving work, all issued by the USA. These stamps were produced during Schofield's famous "blue" period...just kidding! I chose these four to show because I happen to really like 'em.

- nethryk

John Ericsson Memorial, Potomac Park, Washington, D.C., designed by Clair Aubrey Huston after a c.1926 statue by American sculptor James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) depicting Swedish-born American engineer and inventor John Ericsson, who helped to revolutionize military-maritime technology with his ironclad warship, the Monitor. The allegorical figure above Ericsson is "Vision." This stamp was issued on May 29, 1926, Scott No. 628. (Lettering: Frank Lamasure)

Globe and airplane, designed by C.A. Huston and Alvin R. Meissner, and issued on December 12, 1928 to publicize the Civil Aeronautics Conference in Washington, D.C., Scott No. 650.

Myron's Discobolus, designed by Victor S. McCloskey, Jr., and issued on June 15, 1932 to publicize the 10th Olympic Games, held in Los Angeles, California, Scott No. 719. (Lettering: Edward M. Hall)

Crater Lake, Oregon, designed by V.S. McCloskey, Jr,. and issued on September 5, 1934 as one of ten stamps in the National Parks Year issue, Scott No. 745. (Lettering: Donald R. McLeod)

Great scan Perf14, now were going to have even more fun on this thread.

The £1 PUC is also one of my favourites even though I have never seen
one "in person".

The Canadian $1 definitive was printed combined engraving and offset by
the Canadian Bank Note Company.
The engraver was Jorge Peral.
