Perf14 - Your Madeira 2.5 reis stamp is also very handsome. Madeira is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Africa, and part of Portugal. This stamp was designed by Portuguese watercolorist, illustrator and lithographer Alfredo Roque Gameiro (1864-1935), engraved and printed by Waterlow & Sons, London, and issued on April 1, 1898 as the low value in a Portugal common design set commemorating the 4th centenary of the discovery of the sea route to India by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira (c. 1460 or 1469-1524), Scott No. 37, SG No. 123. - nethryk |

That Madeira stamp was also one of the last stamps issued for specific use in the islands of Madeira and Azores (Ceres stamps were still issued with Madeira versions in 1928). Portugal used to make some wonderful engraved stamps back in the day. |

nethryk, lithograving and Andrew...thank you very much for the information. I will post some of Australia's engraved stamps and some British Commonwealth as these are the areas I have been collecting. You have inspired me to start an album called "The Engravers" I have worked out the general layout and the first 3 pages...now all I need to do is get the stamps lol. Thanks for your great efforts with this thread!

Thes are not in any order. My first one is from the 1961 Queen Elizabeth fauna definitive issues, the 11d Bandicoot, designed by Eileen Mayo and engraved by P.E. Morriss. I chose this one first because I happen to have an image of the actual engraving: a |

all of this series was designed by Eileen mayo but three engravers produced the engravings, the Tiger cat was performed by B. Stewart: and the Platypus was engraved by Australia's premier engraver; FD. Manley ( I am having a bad night this is the 6th scan of this stamp! lol) :) |

Taking the designs from a set of watercolours painted by Miss Margaret Stones, B. Stewart engraved all 5 designs. These are two of them. This series was Australia's first attempt at using coloured papers: a |

The navigator series is a favourite among collectors of Australian stamps. They replaced the equally attractive Arms format designs for Australia's higher postage needs and continued, as a series, into the decimal era. The 4/- was released in 1963 and was engraved by B Stewart: a |

The 1 Pound was released in 1964 and was also engraved by B. Stewart. It was printed on both white and cream paper. (I hope this is the cream variety or there's a fox among the chickens!) I wonder if that's a scratch on Bass' face or some more cat hair. lol |

Perf14 - You're welcome, and thank you for posting these excellent scans of stamps by some terrific engravers. It would be great to see more Australia and British Commonwealth stamp scans posted on this thread. - nethryk |

Those Australians are all beautifully engraved but the 4/ Tasman really stands out for me. Now we can add four more engravers to the list.....B. Stewart,E.R.M. Jones,FD. Manley & P.E. Morriss In the early seventies when I had a new issue subscription with Australia Post they still had specimen Navigator sets for sale but I regret to say I didn't buy any. I'm still kicking myself now. |

Frank Davies Manley (1894-1976) was a British-born Australian artist, and a prolific designer and engraver of Australian postage stamps from 1929 to 1959. Here are images of five more stamps designed (except as noted) and engraved by Manley. - nethryk Kangaroo, definitive stamp issued on October 3, 1938, Scott No. 166, SG No. 164. Princess Elizabeth, designed by R.A. Harrison, and issued on November 20, 1947, Scott No. 210, SG Np. 222. Crocodile, designed by German-Australian artist Gert Sellheim (1901-1970), and issued on February 16, 1948, Scott No. 212, SG No. 224. Postmaster Isaac Nichols boarding the brig Experiment to receive mail, adapted by Manley after original poster art by R. Shackel, and issued on April 22, 1959, Scott No. 332, SG No. 331. Approach of the Magi, Christmas stamp issued on November 4, 1959, Scott No 334, SG No. 333. |

Apropos Frank Davies Manley and Gert Sellheim ; they took part in the 1946 Design Competition and each of their submissions was chosen, albeit with different denominations. This page is from the June 1974, Australian Post Philatelic Bulletin. |

Great scans nethryk! The 1/2d Roo is one of my favorites. Lithograving I knew about the competition but I had never seen the actual announcement you posted...that's great!
Since I have been scanning engraved stamps for these posts I have noticed that one of the great advantages of engravings is that you can magnify them greatly without losing the beauty of the work - with modern stamps you soon get lost in a minestrone soup of dots.
I'll scan some British Empire stamps next, but you guys will (again) have to tell me who designed and engraved them as my collection is still neonatal with almost zero research, as yet.
