Someone pointed something funny about one of the Monaco stamps:

How many fingers does a President need?

I wonder who screwed up here ? The designer Monsieur Gandon or the engraver Monsieur Bariangue ?

Anthony, those Monaco ones are beautifully engraved.

Sometimes I think that the French engravers did a better job
for the Monaco stamps than their own country.

Then again the French State Printer made money on those and
Prince Rainier wanted to look good and could afford it with
all that gambling money coming in.

Since we're talking about Monaco, I'll show the stamps I have from 2010 from Monaco. All wonderful engravers. Once again, we'll have to do with photos courtesy of Monaco Poste:

100th Anniversary of the Birth of Juan Manuel Fangio - Design by Theirry Mordant and 3 colour Engraving by Yves Beaujard

100 Years of the Montecarlo Rally - Heliogravure (Photogravure) by Alain Giampaoli

200 Years from the Birth of Napoleon II - Design by Cyril de la Patelliere and 2-colour Engraving by Claude Jumelet

I find this Greek stamp interesting not only because of the
exceptional engraving and design but as you can see from
the bottom imprint PWPW, it was printed by the Polish Security Printing Works, Warsaw.

Designer : L. Sowinski

Engraver : W. L. Vacek

That Monaco Napoleon II doesn't make any sense.

A very poor design in my opinion.

Herb Fichter (1920-1995) was an American master engraver who is best known for his engravings of vintage airplanes, trains, historical vignettes, and portraiture. While he was employed at the BEP (until 1962), he mainly worked as a bank note engraver. Here are images of three USA commemorative stamps, designed by the BEP's Charles R. Chickering, for which Fichter engraved the vignettes.

Perf14:

Those are some awesome scans -- thanks for sharing.

You can use the edit button to clean up your post. Your IMG tags are correct --- the http//..blah..blah.jpg part is nestled between IMG and /IMG tags === you've already got that part correct.

But you don't need any of the URL /URL tag stuff --- you can delete those.

Kirk

Those closeups are great Perf. They show the great detail which
goes into the art of engraving.

How did you achieve uploading at this magnification ?

Some engravings and combos from Denmark in 2009 and 2010, starting with 2009 (high res photos from Danmark post's website):

The Old Town 1909-2009 - Intaglio/Offset - Engravings by Martin Mörck and Bertil Skov Jorgensen

COP15 - the UN Climate Change Conference - Engravings by Martin Mörck and Lars Sjööblom

800th Anniversary of Metropolitanskolen - Engravings by Martin Mörck

Tomorrow I'll come over with the 2010 intaglio stamps.
Goes to show, today we still get some wonderful engravings, and interesting mixtures.

Guys care to explain to me which part of the first set is engraved, and which is offset? Seems the engraving may be the layout and then a layer was put on?

Indeed, the Napoleon is quite strange.

Monaco seems to be 'in love' with multi-colour engravings at the moment.
The photos don't do the stamps justice as they look a bit blurry, contrary to the Danish ones above, which are very crisp.

And looking at the Danish stamps, the last set, and first stamp, the person figure perspective makes him look like a giant. Very different view to the second stamp and the 2 kids.

Lovely stamps from Denmark especially the Old Town.

Andrew, I can't be 100% certain but it appears that only the
black portions are engraved and the rest offset.

Most printers use one colour (usually black) for the fine, sharp details in addition to the offset/litho multicolours.
For example The Austrian State Printers combine 1 colour engraving with multicolour photogravure..

The French ITVF ( Phil@Poste) produce for France and other countries including Monaco, true multicolor engraved stamps where up to nine colours can be printed all engraved.
Czechoslovakia issued multicolour engraved stamps years ago
but I believe now they are mostly combination prints.
