I continue with more Swedish Slania.

Scott 1254 - 1256 1978

100th Birthday of 3 Swedish painters .

The 4.50 Kr with Ivar Arosenius' self portrait is
one of the best Slania has ever done I believe.

The painter represented himself as Christ with a flower garland
replacing the Crown of Thorns

The first stamp was not engraved by Slania but
by an engraver of the printer listed below.

Printer : The Bank of Finland Security Printing House

Printing process : Multicolour recess

Scott 1258

Royal coach built in 1699, issued in 1978

The purple engraving really stands from the coloured paper.

AnthonyUK - Thanks. I have spent many pleasant hours admiring those two Monaco beauties. and of course many other fine stamps engraved by Czeslaw Slania; somehow his work never seems to get old.

Much of the postage stamp-related work done by Romanian artist Serban Zainea (1907-1990) was in their design, but Zainea also performed some stamp engraving work. Here are images of four stamps from a set Zainea produced for Romania that was issued on November 15, 1958 for the centenary of Romanian stamps, Scott Nos. 1252-55.

Hubert Woyty-Wimmer was another Austrian engraver we
haven't mentioned before I believe.

Quote:
Hubert Woyty-Wimmer (1901 Radautz/Bukovina - 1972 Vienna), professor: Austrian printmaker (copper engravings, woodcuts), drawer, graphic designer, illustrator and book designer in Vienna and temporarily London. Studied at the Vienna Institute of Graphic Arts under Erwin Puchinger and Rudolf von Larisch. 1922-1925 under Alfred Cossmann. Established in 1925 his own studio in Vienna. From 1950 working for the famous Thomas de La Rue company in London as an engraver of stamps and banknotes for the United Kingdom and many countries of the British Commonwealth. From 1941 member of the "Vienna Künstlerhaus" artists association, 1951 appointed professor.

The stamp was designed by Josef Seger who produced
many stamp design including the 1948/51 costume series.

The unframed, borderless design really stands out.

That NZ $20 is a great looking stamp Perf.
I've seen pics of it before on another site but didn't
know that the engraver was Slania.

Do you know who the printer was?

Thanks Perf.

I wasn't aware that Leigh-Mardon Pty. had recess capabilities,
I thought that they were strictly a litho/offset printer.

But checking back on the few Canadian stamps Leigh-Mardon printed
I found that the 1994 high value definitives by L&M were also combination
print, recess & lithography .

When I received the Otto Bache SS from the Danish Philatelic
center I was stunned by it's beauty.
IMO one of the best examples of multicolour engraving ever
produced.

Spain Personalities. Perhaps nethryk could help
me out with the engravers.

who took part in the famous Battle of Lepanto.
