Egidio Vangelli designed and engraved stamps for Italy, San Marino, and Vatican City during the 1950s and 1960s. Here are images of five examples of his work. - nethryk Ave Maria Lake, after a painting (see below) by Italian artist Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), issued by Italy on August 7, 1958, Scott No. 748. King Victor Emmanuel and Giuseppe Garibaldi meeting at Teano, issued by Italy on May 5, 1960, Scott No. 797. Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), Italian engraver, publisher, printer, typographer and designer of Bodoni typefaces, issued by Italy on July 30, 1964, Scott No. 893. Dante Alighieri, poet, after an engraving by French artist, illustrator and sculptor Paul Gustave Doré (1832-1883), issued by San Marino on November 20, 1965, Scott No. 622. Queen Jadwiga (Hedwig), Holy Gate with Our Lady of Mercy, Vilnius, Lithuania, and Jagiellonian University Library, Krakow, Poland, designed by Casimira Dabrowska after original artwork by Polish artist Jan Matejko (1838-1893), and issued by Vatican City on May 3, 1966, Scott No. 436. |

lithograving said; Quote: When I received the Otto Bache SS from the Danish Philatelic center I was stunned by it's beauty. IMO one of the best examples of multicolour engraving ever produced. I agree but I haven't received a copy of his 1000th yet, so I may change my mind...lol Great engravings and scans! alex |

Perf, don't know if you already ordered it, but I think Swedish Post still sells it. It's beautiful: The Swedish Postal Museum only has a high res photo/scan of the stamp, not the sheet: |

Perf14 - Thanks. Last week you wrote: "Would anyone here know where I can find information on engravers like: Harrison (the son of the printer, I think); FD Manley (I have a little information on this one, but not much); P E Morriss (or spelled Moris or Morris I have seen all 3 spellings); B Stewart; D. Cameron and G Lissenden ?" In reply, here is the URL for some biographical information about Manley: http://www.daao.org.au/bio/frank-davies-manley/ As for the others, about all I have are some first names and initials: R.A. Harrison (son of T.S.), Peter E. Morris, Bruce Stewart, Donald Cameron, and George Lissenden. The APF may have useful reference material: http://www.apf.org.au/contact.htm Please share any further information you may find about these engravers with us as you post images of their stamps. - nethryk |

I agree with you Andrew about Slania's 1000th, it's a real beauty. Personally I would have preferred if Swedish Post had issued it in one colour like the proof shown below (it is not mine but I couldn't resist lifting it from another forum) In my opinion this really shows Slania's skills whereas the multicolours actually detract from the original engraving. |

You are correct. The one colour proof makes the engraving even more amazing as the design is much more visible. The coloured one takes away the workmanship beauty. |
