An airmail from Austria, 1950, Scott C56, engraved by Hubert Woyty-Wimmer (1901 Radautz/Bukovina - 1972 Vienna), who appeared several pages back:

Blackheaded Gulls

I went for image size rather than image quality with this scan, keeping under the board's maximum. This is the typical size I post:

Posting images on the board does not do well engraved stamps justice. The compression required to reduce the file size results in the loss of all detail.
They really need to be hosted offsite and a link used to display them.

I use the board hosting to maximize the chances that the image will be here as long as the board exists. Photo hosting sites fold, people clean out their accounts, links change.

For most purposes, in most threads, I'm pretty comfortable with the images I post at around 600 pixels in the longest dimension. For threads like this, I was hoping to find a solution to carry through an acceptable amount of detail while still hosting onsite.

I'll fiddle with a few more settings...I'm wedded to the idea of board hosting (for myself...I'm thrilled with the eye candy that the rest of the posters in this thread are posting), so perhaps I'm just out of luck.

Flickr is owned by Yahoo and has been around since 2003 as has Photobucket and Picasa in owned by Google so not exactly fly-by-night companies.
I understand your motives though and it is only my opinion

You can't plan for the human element though.

AnthonyUK - I went pro this morning. The bandwidth usage (hits) on my Photobucket account have skyrocketed over the past month. It's nice to be popular, but I suppose one must pay a price for fame.

Cjd - I would agree with AnthonyUK's comments. Here is a Photobucket image of the Austria Blackhead Gulls stamp posted above for comparison.

Interesting that my old 1975 Scott catalogue calls the Austrian stamp "Laughing gulls", which, if I am not mistaken, is a different species than the Black-headed Gull. Do newer Scott catalogues still refer to it as "laughing"?

cynical - The 2008 Scott catalogue calls them Blackheaded Gulls. The 1965 Stanley Gibbons catalogue simply calls them Gulls. - nethryk

Cynical, Michel also refers to them as Lachmöwen same
as inscribed on the stamp which translates from German
as Laugh(ing)Gulls

I think these birds are indeed Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus) because: 1. Googling "Lachmöwen," the German word actually translates as Black-headed Gull, and 2. While the Black-headed Gull is a European species, the Laughing Gull (Larus atricilla) is found only in the western hemisphere. - nethryk

Jean Pheulpin (1907-1991) studied at l'École Boulle in Paris. During his 40-year career, Pheulpin designed and/or engraved more than 650 stamps, primarily for France, French colonies and former colonies (including many for Laos), but also some for other countries. Here are images of six examples of Pheulpin's artistry with the burin over a range of subjects, all stamps designed and engraved by Pheulpin, except as noted.

AnthonyUK - Your Russian (USSR) stamp (entitled "The Emancipation of the Proletariat," or "The Light!") SG No. 212, Zagorski No. 7, was engraved by the Russian artist and engraver Pericles Spiridonovich Ksidias (1872-1942). - nethryk
