When you figure in the baby Jesus on all the Christmas stamps
and then there's Easter plus all the religious paintings on stamps.
His image is probably on thousands of stamps maybe more even than QEII.

Like this Austrian Christmas stamp from 1971, showing
Infant Jesus as Saviour by Dürer.

Engraver : Alfred Nefe

Printing : combination, 1 colour engraved, multicolour photogravure

lithograving - I share your admiration for the Sweden 1979 Agriculture set Scott 1280 - 1284 (including its colours) designed by Svenolov Ehrén (1927 - 2004) and engraved by Zlatko Jakuš (b. 1945).

I could have one of the stamps photographed by one of my grandchildren, draw an outline of the steel helmet on a blow-up and e-mail it to you (I've been exchanging similar emages with an Ohio friend for years).

Here are images of the three stamps in a set depicting important people and events in French history, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on October 17, 1970.

- nethryk

Armand Jean du Plessis, cardinal-duc de Richelieu et de Fronsac (1585-1642) and the siege of La Rochelle (1572–1573), Scott No. 1286, Y&T No. 1655.

Battle of Fontenoy (May 11, 1745), designed after an oil painting (1828) by French Academic painter Horace Vernet (1789-1863), Scott No. 1287, Y&T No. 1657.

Louis XIV, the Sun King (1638-1715) at Versailles, Scott No. 1288, Y&T No. 1656.

nethryk, those last three are lovely scans, great engraving work
by Decaris.

Since one of my main interest is History especially European
I really enjoy seeing historical figures and events depicted on stamps.

Cardinal Richelieu looks devious and mischievous exactly
the way he probably was in real life according to the
accounts I have read.
Then again to the French he was/is a hero whose scheming
made France the greatest power in Europe.

Here are couple of Swedish coil stamps engraved by Majvor Franzen.
The designer for both was Jan Magnusson who also designed most of the booklet covers over the years.

Has anyone noticed and maybe wondered why there are so many
Swedish stamps with straight edges?

The Swedish Post Office decided in 1930 to eliminate
sheets of stamps and go instead with coils and booklets.
There are some exceptions, for instance Souvenir Sheet stamps
which are perforated on all sides.

Jöns Jacob Berzelius was honoured on the 200th Anniversary of his birth with this stamp in 1979.
He is considered as one of the fathers of modern Chemistry and so highly regarded in Sweden
that they celebrate Berzelius Day every August 20.

lithograving - Thanks. I would readily agree that "history on stamps" is an ever-fascinating pursuit.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a Lamido horseman, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued for use in Cameroun in 1946, Scott No. 316.

These two coil stamps were issued to emphasize workers'
protection in the work place.
I really like the simple design because it speaks for itself.

Again for the 1975 Christmas stamp Austria used the Virgin and Child
motif, this time from a 15th Century altar.
It's like déjà vu all over again , except this one is very well engraved by one of the best ;
Rudolf Toth.
