The 1987 Austrian Christmas stamp shown earlier gives a good example of that impossible Sütterlin / Kurrent script. I have a tough enough time with Fraktur, but Sütterlin and Kurrent leave me completely 100% baffled. There are professional translation firms that will turn old German script into something that modern man can understand ...

"Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht, alles schläft, einsam wacht"

Ryan

The Battle of Nancy was the final and decisive battle of the Burgundian Wars, fought outside the walls of Nancy on January 5, 1477 between the forces of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and (the winner) René II, Duke of Lorraine. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Battle of Nancy, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on June 25, 1977 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the battle, Scott No. 1552, Y&T No. 1943.

Sweden issued these two coils for the sport of Bandy which
on the surface looks similar to ice hockey but is quite different.
In bandy there are 11 players on each team instead of the six
in ice hockey.
Bandy uses a ball, not a puck. The goalie has no stick. etc etc

Engraver : Martin Mörck

This stamp was issued for the 100th anniversary of the Sundsvall strike, the first large Swedish strike.

Engraver : Martin Mörck Notice the heavy lines in the engraving and the choice of brown
which gives the stamp a kind of bleak appearance.

Lorenzo James Hatch (1856-1914) and William A. Grant (1868-1954), were engravers in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in U.S. and in 1908 travelled to China contracted by the Government to work in the newly established Chinese Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
The contract was for 6 years.
Unfortunately, Hatch died in China in 1914, a few months before the end of the contract.
Grant continued in China until 1928, when he retired and returned to United States.

Jorge, those two show the excellent work of Hatch and Grant.

I always wondered why the work load was split between
the vignette and lettering when it came to American engravers.

Up to the mid fifties the Canadian Bank Note Co also
had different engravers sometimes working on the same stamp but
I haven't heard that this practice was common for
other printing firms.
Or was it?

Anyway it's nice to see you back posting here Jorge.

Otto Stefferl (born 1931), painter, graphic artist, engraver, began designing stamps in 1964 and a couple of years later years later also engraved his first stamp.
Altogether he worked on 157 Austrian stamps but received no more contracts from the Austrian State Printer after the year 2000.

Here is an interview he did in 2010 but it's only in German.

This stamp below for the 25th Anniversary of The Carinthian Summer
Festival is a good example of his fine workmanship.

Every year in sequence two letters of the words BRIEFMARKE & PHILATELIE.

For this stamp Otto Stefferl was only the designer.
