graphis, that East German Berlin SS looks pretty good for 10c. That's way below face value, even though the DDR Mark was worth less than the West German DM. Actually some people said at the time it was worthless So where did you get them. ebay? |

Lithograving I would like your opinion regarding this engraved Philippine stamp: It was engraved by the American Bank Note Company and issued to commemorate the 1952 visit of Philippine President Quirino to Indonesia. Since it was released in October, 1953, I suspect that there may have been difficulties printing the multicolored stamp. As a cover collector I don't know much about stamp printing but it seems that this has to have been an ambitious project. I find the stamp to be rather amazing. My question: Do you agree or is this nothing special? Thanks |

Quote:So where did you get them. ebay? lithograving..once a week I go to my local stamp ship here in Ottawa..and last Saturday some folks came in to sell a stamp collection..most likely a part of somebody's estate..anyway after the owner of the shop "cherry picked" what he wanted.. he let us vultures go through the albums, packets and envelopes and take what we wanted at 10 cents a pop..and some of the "better" stuff at 15 cents..i guess he just didn't want to have to deal with all the inventory. It was fun. |

I found this imperforate stamp/label/Cinderella? in my grandfather's old album. It is very similar to 2 stamps issued in 1952, Michel 688, 690 engraved by B. Roule except this one has as you can see the inscription OSTRAVA 67 and other Czech writing. Florian, I could use your help on this one.
lithograving - Your image on p. 88 posted on 12/15/2012 is a 60-heller stamp cut out of an illustrated commemorative envelope issued on 06/17/1967 as postal stationery to mark The National Topical Exhibition of Postage Stamps OSTRAVA 1967. The envelope was printed from flat plates in two colours: one for the stamp, the other (brown) for the engraved picture of Ostrava and inscriptions on the envelope.
The stamp showing miner, pithead and Arms of the City of Ostrava was designed and engraved by Bohdan Roule (1921 - 1960) and originally issued on 09/08/1951 for Miners' Day 1951 in two denominations (1.50 Kès and 5.00 Kès)

lithograving & graphis - I believe that Jindra Schmidt's given name was actually Jindrich (with the "lower-case R" with the "up-tack" diacritic mark), and that "Jindra" (Henry) is a variant form of that name. I am aware that there is a background story about his choosing to use "Jindra S." as his signature on postage stamps, but I am doubtful of my ability to tell it properly, as I cannot read Czech. Perhaps florian would share what he knows about it with us. graphis - Nice images of Slania stamps! Your New Zealand stamp reminded me of something engraved by Czeslaw Slania which comparatively few people have ever seen: ISO 14001 Certificate for Dwory S.A., 2002. - nethryk |

I don't know if there is any thing "special" about that Philippine stamp except that multicolour printing which was still rather rare 60 years ago.
Yours appears to be a combination print 1 colour (black) engraved and 3 colour lithography. ABNC also printed the US overrun countries series in 1943/44 via combination recess & offset . I believe they had problems then with centering.
Sorry I wasn't any help.
It's a nice looking stamp though, hope you post some more here.
