Not sure if I've posted this in the right topic, but found this the other day and thought it might be of interest.

Nice link Stampgal.
It reminded of the great, but controversial, philatelic author James Mackay who was a great promoter of St.Kilda Postal History.

Thanks.

Londonbus1......I was on the Isle of Arran once.

By coincidence, I have just borrowed an encyclopedia of stamp collecting from the library, by Dr James MacKay. I am finding it a useful and interesting book. Why was he so controversial?

By the way I am from a Scottish island (not Arran...) and knew someone who as a boy found a St Kilda mailboat washed up. Don't know what happened to it though.

In the seventies he was found guilty at the Old Bailey for stealing Stamp Proofs from the British Museum where he worked.
Then later, sometime in the late 1990's, he was accused of Plaigiarism after writing two books which were large part copied from other, older books.

St.Kilda was evacuated and has been uninhabited since 1930, save for an army base. I believe James Mackay was stationed there whilst doing his National service.

What a shame, I love his books, a very
knowledgeable gentleman.
He has done much to broadcast and promote philately.

St Kilda was on a local TV series last week called "Coast"
A very, very beautiful Island.

(and a passable football team in Australia )

St Kilda in Melbourne Australia, was named after a ship, which
in turn was named after the Island.

"Skildar" an ancient Norse name for shields.
