Thanks, Marcbkk. The avatar is Scott #929, the Iwo Jima single. It was issued in 1945 to commemorate the achievements of the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II.
By happenstance, I was listening to a Johnny Cash CD the other day. One of the songs was "The Ballad of Ira Hayes". Ira Hayes was a Native American who was one of the men raising the flag in that famous photo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ira_HayesIra Hayes returned a hero
Celebrated through the land
He was wined and speeched and honored
Everybody shook his hand
But he was just a Pima Indian
No water, no home, no chance
At home nobody cared what Ira'd done
And when did the Indians dance
Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war
