I like that "early version of a horse". It's kind of cute. Here are some more horsemen. Slightly different level of technology. I don't have a catalog, so other than stating the obvious (would you guess that this stamp is from Nigeria?), I know nothing about this stamp. |

That's a gorgeous stamp, stamphop! I don't have a catalog either, but you can go to freestampcatalogue.com and look up stamps if you know about what year they are. Your Nigerian Bornu horsemen stamp is a Scott # 81 issued in 1953. I love to look into the history, etc behind the stamp --- yours was interesting -I did a google search for Bornu horsemen and there were numerous Kingdoms trying to control routes of trade and water thruout Africa. The Bornu horsemen ,as well as their horses, were known to wear light iron mail during battle. Think heat and trying to fight a battle wearing that!

Thanks for the website tip. I was able to find the Nigerian stamp, but it is listed as part of a series of definitives. Maybe I'm still a bit loopy from the pain medication I'm taking, but I couldn't figure out how you determined it was a Scott #81. (Of course, I still need to learn how to read catalogs in the first place...) |

Yeah, Jimmy Cliff! Great music! Makes me think I'm on a beautiful sandy beach sipping one of those fruity drinks with an umbrella in it! Of course, that's a beach without any SHARKS around it! Gussyboy1 |

Okay, back to horses... Image Insert: I am just fascinated by the Terracotta Warriors discovered in 1974. They surrounded the first Emperor of China, Shi Huang Di's tomb. These date back to 210 BC. There are approx. 7,000 soldiers, 130chariots, 520 horses, and 150 cavalry! What an undertaking that must have been to have his artisans create this army to protect him thruout eternity! Some of the warriors/artifacts can be seen at the Bowers Museum in Santa Anna, California May 18 thru Oct 12, 2008 Also, Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands items will be on display Feb 2 thru Aug 31, 2008 Gussyboy1 |

That horse and carriage stamp is pretty. What's up with the +5F, though? A variable rate stamp that is either 15F or 20F depending on how it's canceled? |

Another horse and carriage, but typical of the American manner, a bit less stately (I believe "breakneck speed" would probably be an accurate description - no roads, just open prairie). |

Here's a few Confederate horses. And a few from the Russian Federation. |
