What's up with the +5F, though? A variable rate stamp that is either 15F or 20F depending on how it's canceled?

Stamphop.

That is a Saar semi-postal stamp, the postage rate was 15 Francs, p;us a 5 franc surtax to a charity.

Thanks Gussyboy. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my grandfather. I only hope he knew how much I appreciate the collection (although I think he did, considering he decided to go ahead and give it to me and my sister when we were kids - for a few years, we were both incredibly diligent working on it and adding to it). My mother also collected occasional new issues and FDCs (the designs she liked) starting around the late '70s into the '90s. I know she knows how much I like them. (When I talk to her on the phone, we talk about what I'm currently up to with the collection.)

I started collecting FDCs in college, so now I really want to expand my cover collection to include some old items. Especially after viewing t360's colection of Columbian Exposition covers. Wow.

I want to thank you all for posting in my thread, I think it's the longest thread I have ever started.

Now we are onto ships, here's a few to make LaSwabbie weak at the knees.

That is a really lovely set. I love the line of penguins, too.

I've always wanted to go to Antarctica. I started a list on 43 Things a while back (January). And I mean started, I've only got 2 items in my list. Number 2 is "See the Ross Ice Shelf".

And since we are on the topic of the polar regions, here is one of my more recent acquisitions.

I've only ever seen the Aurora Borealis once in my life, but it was something I won't forget.

Edit: Oh and I keep forgetting to say thanks Bob for the explanation about semi-postal stamps.

Wow! Gorgeous! I emailed a few days ago -to a friend in Calif
a scan of my Aurora and Australian Borelias,
come to find out he's obsessed with it--has it as a screen saver,
3 books autographed by authors on Aurora, etc!
He told me that now he's excited about stamps! He told me that the
Alaskan Indians say that when they pass away their souls ride to heaven on the Aurora Borealis
Steve--I love the Aurora B. with the tepees! Beautiful colors!

Let's see, I believe we left off at either US or Australian Borealis, so how about US stamp.
