Finally going through the old worldwide collection my mother accumulated. Found several I will have to study closer to see if I can indeed identify them. This one though, is beyond my ability to comprehend. I think I have got it right-side up. Country/date/value would be appreciated (though given that it is in this collection I can well guess the value at $0.20).

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Yes, it should be 1 piastre.

If I remember correctly, Scott does not list the color change, although I have seen this before.

Nigel would know. He's my go to guy for the Turkey (and a few thousand other specialty areas).

Wowzers! That will make it the earliest stamp I own then. I think. It does look reddish in the scan, but it is really yellow/orange. Also, those numerals are the number 1 in the corners, so it could very well be the SG93 MNH . . sorta. It's a bit faulty and the gum is rather "crazed".

I don't think I have ever seen a mint copy of this series without "crazed" gum.

Don't get me wrong. I think the "crazed" gum is like a badge of courage for a stamp that old.

Turns out it is Scott 44, and technically of the Ottoman Empire (which I know is Turkey, basically, but cooler sounding). Knowing which country to search for, I found this website quite useful: http://www.sariucak.com/index.html
