I was glancing thru some old passports that belonged to my Great Aunt & Uncle and I found some stamps in them. Does anyone know why stamps are used in passports? Also, it would be great if anyone could help to I.D. any of these. For some reason I can't find any of these . Any help would be appreciated.

Stamps are revenue raisers apart from paying fees for postage.
To raise funds for the Spanish American war,
the US govt decided to tax documentation.

The US "Battleship" revenue was even used on marriage
certificates.

The British revenues are catalogued in Barefoot.

The stamp at the top, is a Lebanese Consular revenue
is a tax/fee on the Visa application
similar to this one printed in Beirut.

United Arab Republic or UAR was from 1958 until 1961 a union between Egypt and Syria.
After 1961 Egypt continued to use UAR until 1971. Your stamps are dated 1963. So the Country would be Egypt.

I used to travel through Jordan frequently from 2005 onwards and they placed adhesive stamps in my passport. Iraq would place a stamp on your exit plane ticket showing that you paid the $1 exit fee.
