Yes, the link Bob gave is very good. I often go there to look at the Stamps when I am feeling down ! They are a bit pricey, but the site is good and informative. Nice list too......quite simplistic but agreeable. Londonbus1.....Loves Glass Slippers |

If you have read the description from the Link that Bobgggg gave us, then you will know that: 'the design and colour scheme must be carefully chosen in order that such a small piece of paper can catch one's eye and get the message across' Here are three good examples, in my opinion, of such Poster stamps. Poster stamps advertising Poster stamps ! And finally, Poster stamps on a Poster stamp advertising Poster stamps ! Londonbus1....had enough yet |

Would you say these get the message across ??? A Poster stamp advertising Great Britain ! A store in Springfield. The 1937 Scout Jamboree in Washington DC. One for Stampgal....a Scottish Insurance Company ! How would you rate those for advertsing purposes. Good or not so good. Give your impressions. |

This is one of my favourites. Clear, colourful, easy-to-read and with great usage of the 1842 Philadelphia Despatch Post design. A hummer ! Give that club a bone ! |

The scout Jamboree does the trick - Scout symbol, Jamboree and date, and iconic symbol of the place - a clear message. The Scottish Insurance co. Well, thanks for the thought LB! But despite the faint sound of bagpipes emanating from it (or is that just me...?) it fails to say anything about the company. At best its a nice "freebie" piece of miniature art. The Springfield store one is a complete disaster - almost literally, as it looks like its burning down. Neither does it say anything about the store itself. Not a great advertisement... |

Good points Stampgal !
I agree about the store stamp. Quite dull and uninteresting. It wouldn't catch my eye to shop there.
More thoughts anyone ?

Forgot to mention the GB "ad"! Seen through modern eyes, a superb bit of "branding". Powerful imagery, an emotionally charged message, hit the spot, I would have thought. What's the date on that? I'm just wondering how long the memories of war were used in public "messages" post 1945?

Quote: What's the date on that? I'm just wondering how long the memories of war were used in public "messages" post 1945? No date on that one, but I guess around late forties. The memories of war.....will they ever be forgotten. Let's make peace. Londonbus1 |

I assumed the shield design was created during the war...it might have been postwar? The "Help Her Cause" sounded contemporaneous to me. Great stamp, in any event.
My eyes didn't even stop on Smith and Murray, so I'd say it didn't do its job, for me. Looking at it again, in light of stampgal's comment, I agree about the inferno raging all 'round.
With apologies in advance to all our friends in the insurance business, the Scots are trying to sell insurance, so how compelling can it be? I think this approach, which says to me, "Your Gonna Have to Buy it Anyway...Might as Well Keep it Local", works as well as any other could. "Choose Scottish Union...Our Actuaries Say You'll Live Longer!" Probably not. |
