Jean Henri Dunant (1828-1910), also known as Henry Dunant, was a Swiss businessman and social activist. During a business trip in 1859, he was witness to the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in modern day Italy. Dunant recorded his memories and experiences in the book A Memory of Solferino (1862) which inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863. Also, the First Geneva Convention (1864) was based on Dunant's ideas. In 1901 Dunant received the first Nobel Peace Prize, together with Frédéric Passy. Here is an image of a Red Cross semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Dunant and a depiction of a wounded soldier, printed by photogravure, and issued by Switzerland on December 1, 1928 to commemorate Dunant's birth centenary, Scott No. B48, plus a photographic portrait of him in 1901.
