Does anyone know about Ceylon stamps being used in the Maldive Islands?

I know that Ceylon issues were in use from March 1907 until 1909.

This usage is, however, much later, being 1938.

Stanley Gibbons in their listings describe the Maldive Islands as a British Protectorate. Elsewhere, however, I have seen the islands described as a Dependency of Ceylon. Is this relationship an explanation of Ceylon usage in the Maldives? Was this usage tolerated by the authorities, or indeed, was it permitted?

Thanks folks.
