Picture the domestic scene. My 3 yr old daughter asks, "Can I have some stamps to play with?". I find the bag of stamps put aside for just such a moment. "Here you are," I say, deciding to leave her to it. She's at a stubborn stage and too much parental hovering can put her off. I decide to add even more excitement to her activity, "Would you like to use Mummy's stamp tongs?". She nods enthusiastically, "yes please!". (My daughter may be stubborn, but she is polite...). I continue whatever I was doing (I was going to say Housework, but that would bring the story into the realms of fiction). I watched surrepticiously. She carefully held her stamp tongs the way she had seen Mummy do. Then she picked up each stamp very carefully with her fingers, transferred it to the tongs, held it aloft, then put it on a new pile. When she'd finished "sorting", she put down her tongs, and spread all the stamps out again using both hands. This is the moment in which she became a true stamp collector. There was a short silence. "Mummy!" she yelled, looking around her in vain for the tongs, "Where are my picky things?".
