I have a pile of Documentary Stamps, most of which have something stamped over it. I appologize for not having pictures of all, but are working on in.

#1 Red 50 cent Documentary(IRS) Wm. J. Duane with this printed in black over it, "Series 1941"

#2 Green 1 Dollar Documentary stamp(IRS)with Woman? and "Stock Transfer" printed over in black.

#3 Red 2 Dollar Documentary stamp(IRS) same as #2

#4 Brown 5 cent Documentary with Washington. Someone wrote a Scott # R20 but do not know if it is right.

#5 Blue 2 cent Woman with # R152

Can anyone help me with these? Sorry to not have photos. Thanks in advance!

John

You have tax revenue stamps. If you are wanting values take a look at the Scott's Specialized Catalog which lists those items. I have some myself & enjoy the diversity & engraving, but I don't have my catalog with me.

I guess this should have been listed under Back of Book stuff, but I am still learning!

Many of them have a perforation cancellation. That is not very desireable, I take it?!

Hi Jdgarst0720,

These revenue stamps are listed in the Scott Specialized Catalogue for United States Stamps.
You should be able to get an older copy on ebay for not too much money ($10 or so).
A five year old copy works just fine since the prices don't change that much from year to year for revenues.

The desirability of cancels is in this order
(least desirable to most desirable):

perforation or cut cancel
embossed cancel
pen cancel
rubber stamp cancel
printed cancel

SON and clearly readable rubber stamp or printed cancels are worth a premium.

Please try to post some pictures of your stamps.
Everyone enjoys seeing them.

Tom
Thanks for the insight on the types of cancels. Very Helpful. Now someone just needs to post an example of each to complete the lesson.
